Many parents want to be involved in teaching their kids how to read, and witnessing a child’s progress can be right up there with the excitement of other independence milestones like tying shoes or riding a bike. Just like we teach tricks for making shoelaces into “bunny ears” or give kids training wheels, we can intentionally adjust the job of reading to help kids practice and improve. Decodable books are an excellent tool for this.

What are decodable books?
Decodable books contain a highly controlled collection of words that fit a certain stage of phonics learning. For instance, in the Phonic Books Dandelion Launchers series, in the first books, Sam, Tim, Tam, and Is It Sam?, almost all the words are spelled only with the consonants ‘s,’ ‘t,’ ‘m,’ and the short vowel sounds /a/ (as in “at”) and /i/ (as in “it”). Readers who have been introduced to these letters and sounds can use what they know to read these books — and become more and more automatic while they do it.

How our brains learn to read
Reading decodable books can be a perfectly tailored workout for the reading brain. Brain imaging studies from cognitive neuroscientists like Stanislas Dehaene, author of Reading in the Brain, show how different areas of the brain light up as a reader sees the letters in a word, links them to spoken sounds, and lands on the word meaning. For proficient readers, this all happens unconsciously, within milliseconds. Newer readers need systematic teaching about how letters represent sounds to spell words, plus lots of repetitive practice, to successfully wire the brain for reading.

Matching kids to decodable books
A child can’t automatically decode any book labeled “decodable.” Rather, a book is decodable for a reader when its demands fit what that reader knows about phonics. Then, they can realistically use what they know to practice decoding — or “sounding out”— the words. Decodable books help reduce frustration and build good reading habits. When the words in a book fit kids’ decoding skills, they know what to do. They don’t need to guess at words based on the picture or context.

Decodable books typically progress in a cumulative sequence. This allows the phonics demands to build over time. Later titles in the Phonic Books Dandelion Launchers series include words with other consonant sounds, short vowels ‘o,’ ‘e,’ and ‘u,’ and eventually, other patterns like word endings “-ing” and “-le,” consonant digraphs like “ch” and “sh,” and consonant blends like “st.”

Progressing through a series of decodable books lets kids practice previously learned skills while making small steps forward. Brand-new readers can start at the beginning of a decodable book series. If a child already has some reading skills, talk with their teacher about any phonics assessment data they’ve collected and about the class’s phonics “scope and sequence” — which phonics skills are taught and in what order. All this information can help you know where to jump into a decodable book series.

(It’s important to know that decodable books usually contain a handful of “outlier” words that don’t match the phonics skills. Many series list them at the front of each book. It’s best to pre-teach or practice these words with kids. These are often high-frequency words — common words like “the” or “are” that help make meaningful sentences. For more information about high-frequency words, see Research-Based Tips to Help Kids Learn Sight Words.)

Talking to kids about decodable books
Sometimes adults worry that decodable books are too stilted, boring, or babyish for children to enjoy. This is easy to mitigate by hitting on some key points when we present them to kids:

 • Decodable books are “reading practice books” written by reading experts. They are a tool kids use for a little while as they learn about using letters and sounds to read.
 • When you read decodable books, it’s easy to track your progress. As you learn more about phonics, you can read more challenging books!
 • You don’t have to guess the words in a decodable book because you can use what you know about letters and sounds to read the words.
 • Reading decodable books is just one part of becoming a better reader. Listening to and talking about all kinds of books and learning about new words and ideas also help exercise your reading brain.

Take care to choose decodable books that fit a child’s developmental level and phonics skills. Younger kids generally get excited to read — actually read! — any decodable books that match their skill set. Older kids still working on building their phonics skills might be more sensitive. For them, choose a decodable series written for older readers, such as the Phonic Books Moon Dogs series. These books have illustrations, storylines, and humor that appeal to older kids.

Decodable books are one part of learning to read
Decodable books are useful “training wheels” while learning to read, but they aren’t the only way we help kids become readers. Being able to read decodable text hinges on phonics teaching. Before reading a decodable book that requires a new phonics skill, teach kids that skill with a quick introduction and some practice words jotted on a whiteboard or a fun game or practice activity. Children also need phonological awareness skills to hear the spoken sounds represented by the letters and patterns they’re working on, so revisiting those foundational skills is important, too.

Comprehension is always the end goal of reading. Talking about a book’s content, whether kids are reading Is It Sam? or any other title, is essential. Plus, we help kids’ comprehension in the future by building their background knowledge and vocabulary. We can do this through reading aloud and having varied conversations and experiences.

How To Help Your Kids Make New Friends https://www.readbrightly.com/jennie-allen-tips-on-making-friends/ https://www.readbrightly.com/jennie-allen-tips-on-making-friends/#respond Fri, 09 Aug 2024 09:00:48 +0000 https://www.readbrightly.com/?p=107915 Author Jennie Allen shares her tried-and-true tips that kids can use to make new friends, combat loneliness, and gain confidence.

The post How To Help Your Kids Make New Friends appeared first on Brightly.

]]>
A few years ago, my family and I moved two hundred miles to a new town. It was like our lives had turned upside down! My four kids were nervous, as was I. They all needed friends, tutors, mentors — people to call their own. I did, too.

In that season, my husband, kids, and I all experienced the ache of loneliness in our own ways. We all wished so hard to be known, seen, and accepted, but at first, we didn’t feel like we were. We felt alone.

One of the best ways to relieve loneliness – for ourselves and our kids – is to make a friend. But people ask me all the time how to do that and how to help their kids do it, too. Here are my tried-and-true tips for kids — what I call the “Making Friends Toolbox:”

 • Talk about it. Sit down together and brainstorm. Search together for ways to get involved, volunteer, meet kids, and expand your friend group. Support your kids’ ideas and help them along the way.
 • Join a club or class. Encourage your child to start a new habit that involves others. This could be a sports team, a service club, an art class, a theater club, a choir or orchestra, or any group activity related to their interests. They’ll automatically have things to talk about with people! You can help them by looking up who else is doing something they enjoy in your area.
 • Go first. We’re all just waiting for people to come to us. Sometimes this happens, but a lot of times we must go first and be the kind of friends we want to have. If your kid wants better friends or feels left out, encourage them to go first and break the ice. If your kid isn’t sure where to start, here are a few practical steps to try. (Remind them that going first can be awkward, and that’s okay!)
 • Pick someone. Ask your kid to think of someone they’d like to know better. Someone who seems friendly, open, and willing to talk. Someone interesting. Or even someone new or who doesn’t know as many people.
 • Find an opportunity. Help your kids figure out how and when to see them. Will it be in class, at sports practice, or at a club they’ve joined? Your kid can look out for them there.
 • Strike up a conversation. Encourage your child to start with something they notice about them, encourage them, or compliment them. Maybe they’ve noticed something they do that’s special – your child should say so! Try, “Nice job in practice today! How’d you get so good?”
 • Ask questions. Kids can encourage people to relax and open up by asking fun questions. Ideas could be, “If you could be an animal, what animal would you be?” or “If you could have a superpower, what would it be?”
 • Invite them. Challenge your child to ask someone to sit with them at lunch, play catch, hit the basketball court together, or join them for something they already have planned.

Making new friends is a trial-and-error process for adults and kids alike. But as our kids try and try again, they’ll grow. Encourage them not to quit, initiate, go first, and never be afraid to talk to you about their loneliness. They can find their people!

Yet reading aloud to older kids provides them with many important benefits.

The post The Importance of Reading Aloud to Big Kids appeared first on Brightly.

Only 17% of parents of kids ages 9–11 read aloud to their children. Yet 83% of kids ages 6–17 say being read to is something they either loved or liked a lot. (Scholastic’s “Kids & Family Reading ReportTM”)

Mom Andrea Chisholm, echoes this sentiment, “Even though my older one can easily read books himself, he still loves to be read to at night.”

For many kids, being read to by their parents is a cherished ritual. But it’s also much more than that. Reading aloud to kids helps expand their literacy skills, love of reading, worldview, and more. Here are some key reasons it’s important to read aloud to your older kids:

Lets Them Experience the Joy of Story
The goal is to love the story. That’s the point of reading, unless you’re reading for meaning. When my oldest daughter didn’t “take” to reading as I’d hoped, I let her listen to hours of audiobooks and read aloud to her multiple times a day. I wanted her to get hooked on the stories in the chapter books, without the frustration of reading them. Like her, all readers — and especially struggling readers — learn to love stories by hearing stories.

Models Fluent Reading
When you read to kids, you’re modeling how to read language. You pause at commas and periods. Your voice inflection changes when you read questions or exclamations. And you can show what you, a fluent reader, do when you come to a word you don’t know. (Even if you’re faking that you don’t know it.)

Helps Expand Their Vocabulary
Kids’ auditory comprehension is higher than their reading comprehension. When you pick a challenging book that your kids can’t read on their own, you are exposing them to a wealth of new vocabulary words. This stretches a child’s language development, particularly if you stop to talk about the meaning of these harder words.

Exposes Kids to New Authors, Texts, and Genres
Reading aloud can get kids hooked on a new author or series of books. Once a child falls in love with the story or author, it’s hard to hold them back from reading it on their own.

Plus, reading aloud gives kids a chance to explore genres and texts they wouldn’t normally select.

“I often read the first chapter or two of a new book to my daughter to pull her into a book that she might not have chosen otherwise,” says Natalie Figge of Planet Smarty Pants.

There are so many amazing books that kids don’t pick to read on their own. These books make great read alouds — in what I call the “just give this book a chance” category.

Builds Awareness and Empathy
Literature is one of the best ways to help kids understand something without experiencing it for themselves. And books do this with all sorts of subjects and concepts, building our children’s understanding of humanity and the world around them.

Improves Kids’ Long-Term Reading Success
Finally, you probably know that decades of research shows that reading aloud to a child daily is one of the most important activities for her reading success. That goes for older kids, too. Kids who are read to have good vocabularies, write well, and do well overall in school (Hiebert, Scott, & Wilkinson, 1985 U. S. Department of Education meta-study of 10,000 studies). They’re also more likely to keep reading on their own.

How To Pick the Perfect Baby Name https://www.readbrightly.com/how-to-pick-the-perfect-baby-name/ https://www.readbrightly.com/how-to-pick-the-perfect-baby-name/#respond Wed, 22 May 2024 20:24:17 +0000 https://www.readbrightly.com/?p=115242 Learn tips from Colleen Slagen, professional baby name consultant and content creator, to find the perfect name for your child.

The post How To Pick the Perfect Baby Name appeared first on Brightly.

]]>
Why IS naming a baby so hard? They give you 9 whole months to come up with something, and yet, the baby arrives, and so many parents are scrambling to land on a name, sheepishly asking the birth certificate handler for just a few more minutes.

As so often the story goes with my clients, my husband and I were pretty set on our first child’s name. We toyed around with other ideas, but always came back to the same name we both loved. With our second child and especially our third, it seemed to get harder and harder. It took us nearly two days in the hospital to land on a name with my youngest son. Who we now both love and couldn’t see him with any other name.

As with many decisions in life now, we are inundated with so many choices and outside opinions. And choice brings both freedom and opportunity for self-expression of one’s values, but it can also be overwhelming. Too much choice. It seems like every name on your list comes with a but. But I googled it … but I just saw this girl from high school used it … but that was my old boss’ name and … but my mom says it’s too weird … but it’s so popular … You break out the baby name book desperately searching, convinced the perfect name exists and you just haven’t found it.

As a baby name consultant, I have now worked with hundreds of families to help them find the perfect name for their child. Here are some of my tips and learnings to help you do the same.

 1. Take it seriously. Do some research! If you’re making this decision with a partner, make sure you’re on the same page or have figured out a way to compromise if you have different tastes. Decide what is most important to you and where you are each willing to give a little. Do not expect the perfect name to land in your lap or hit you on the head the moment you see your baby.
 2. Strategize. Decide whether you want to have the name set in stone before delivery. If not, narrow it down to a top 2, maybe 3 names to choose between after the baby is born. Some people do get that feeling of which name fits the baby best when they arrive, but many people don’t, and the exhaustion and hormones don’t make the decision any easier! Consider finding out the gender of your child if you are really struggling with picking out names.
 3. Prioritize. Some people have checklists a mile long of their baby name criteria. I respect the ambition, but sometimes you do have to decide which things are most important to you, because many names aren’t going to check every single box. Popularity, meaning, sibling cohesion, how well it sounds with your last name, and nickname-ability. There are so many things to think about with a name! Be prepared to loosen your criteria a little if agreeing on a name is challenging.
 4. Lower your expectations. You read that correctly. Fairytale syndrome. Many people are looking for this magical feeling or sublime connection to a name to hit them, and that just doesn’t always happen. “With our first child, we just knew” is what I often hear. Just like it can sometimes take longer to bond with a second child, it may take some time to feel connected to the name you choose for subsequent children. Allow room for the connection to the name to grow once the baby is here.
 5. Have fun. Cheesy, I know. But sometimes this process gets clouded by anxiety and indecision. Try and have a little fun with it! I’ve had some friends do a baby name bracket. And try, TRY not to let outside opinions weigh on you too heavily.

How To Use Book Talks in the Classroom To Build Reading Excitement https://www.readbrightly.com/book-talks-in-the-classroom/ https://www.readbrightly.com/book-talks-in-the-classroom/#respond Thu, 21 Mar 2024 09:00:48 +0000 https://www.readbrightly.com/?p=103666 While many readers find informal conversations about books rewarding, structured “book talks” are a powerful tool for convincing other readers to pick up a title, especially in the classroom.

The post How To Use Book Talks in the Classroom To Build Reading Excitement appeared first on Brightly.

When I finish a satisfying book, I often think about who else would love it. Sometimes, it’s the perfect option for my mom’s longstanding book club. Sometimes, I dash off a recommendation to my group text with my childhood friends. Sharing one’s excitement about books evokes positive feelings for readers of all ages — and helps spread reading joy.

Reap the benefits of book talks
While many readers find informal conversations about books rewarding, structured “book talks” are a powerful tool for convincing other readers to pick up a title, especially in the classroom. A book talk is part summary and part review, delivered as an advertisement. It’s tailored to the audience and aims to tell them, in a concise, engaging way, why they will love the book.

Book talks give the speaker a different way to think about a title. How can you distill what you liked about the book into a few sentences? How can you pique others’ interest without giving away the entire plot? Often, when I’m preparing a book talk, it forces me to shape my emotional reaction to a book into words.

Hearing an appealing preview of the book’s content builds a listener’s background knowledge of the book’s topics and themes. It may suggest connections to previous experiences or knowledge they wouldn’t have thought about on their own. Most importantly, book talks can turn a reader onto a title they wouldn’t have otherwise considered.

Use classroom book talks to entice kids to read
I often advise teachers to think of themselves as marketing directors for reading. This mentality helps you set up your classroom library for success and can drive the way you talk about books with students. You are the ideal person to sell awesome reading experiences. To hone your book talk skills:

 • Learn from professional book-talkers. Let yourself get excited to give a compelling book talk. Watch a seasoned expert, like energetic teacher and author Colby Sharp, talking up The Do More Club by Dana Kramaroff or Mexikid by Pedro Martín. Go ahead and steal all the moves!
 • Craft your lead. When you approach a book talk like a marketing pitch, it helps you consider which aspects will draw in other readers. Does the book share characteristics with a title or series you know they loved? Does it relate to school, community, or world events that are on their mind?
 • Make it genuine. Kids are geniuses at spotting a fake. Maybe you can pull off a great book talk about a book you haven’t actually read, but at least admit it. Be engaging, but be yourself; don’t overdo it on kid-slang. (This tip comes from my child, who recently told me I should stick to “speaking grown-up.”)
 • Recruit a marketing team. For many kids, the person suggesting the book is just as important as the book itself. Bring in other respected book talkers to sell books to your class, like older students from years past or a favorite school adult

Invite kids to the book talk club
Getting kids involved in giving book talks benefits everyone. Preparing a book talk is an excellent comprehension exercise, and hearing book talks from other kids builds a community of readers. To get kids book talking in your class:

 • Share lots of inspiring examples. Librarians are often awesome at book talks, along with social media creators. However, some of the best models for kids are other kids! Check out this short example of a book talk about Hidden Truths by Elly Swartz or this longer talk about Wonder by R. J. Palacio.
 • Create a list of book talk dos and don’ts. When kids have heard enough sample book talks, they can help identify a list of tips. DO tell the title and author, and tell a bit about the main character. DON’T give away the entire plot or spoil the ending!
 • Explore different types of book talks. Help kids flex their book-talking muscles by talking about books in different ways. Informal pair/shares about what everyone is currently reading get kids talking about books often. Picture book talks can be prepared quickly, and older kids love revisiting this treasured format. Switch up the focus of book talk assignments. For instance, ask kids to introduce a character (or even act as that character), describe the book’s setting, share a cliffhanger from the plot, or read a favorite quote.
 • Add incentive. Kids love a bit of friendly competition. Try a “March Madness” book talk event where students talk their way through a bracket, trying to convince their peers of the best book of the year. Or, post a collection of book talk videos for another class to view and rate each one on how likely they are to read the book.

Tips and Tricks for Building Kids’ Reading Stamina https://www.readbrightly.com/tips-building-kids-reading-stamina/ https://www.readbrightly.com/tips-building-kids-reading-stamina/#respond Mon, 19 Feb 2024 12:00:41 +0000 https://www.readbrightly.com/?p=19715 Research shows that the amount of reading time and reading volume significantly impacts kids’ reading success. These tips can help kids build their reading stamina.

The post Tips and Tricks for Building Kids’ Reading Stamina appeared first on Brightly.

]]>
We talk a lot about teaching kids to read, but what about teaching them to keep reading? Reading, like any mentally or physically demanding activity, takes stamina. Acknowledging this to kids and purposefully helping them build their reading stamina empowers them to go the distance as readers.

In the classroom, helping kids’ increase their reading stamina can make a successful literacy block. No one wins when the teacher has to spend most of their Reading Workshop cajoling kids to read and squashing interruptions instead of teaching small groups and conferencing with kids about their books. Even more importantly, we want kids reading as much as possible both in and out of school. Research shows that the amount of reading time and reading volume significantly impacts kids’ reading success. Here are some tried-and-true teacher tricks for building kids’ reading stamina.

Give reading stamina a prominent place in your reading curriculum.
The beginning of the school year, when classrooms are putting school and homework routines into place, is a classic time to talk about reading stamina. (Though you can start anytime, and it’s not a one-and-done concept!) Set aside time for talking about what “stamina” means and why it’s essential for reading. Lay out your plans for helping kids strengthen their reading endurance. Feel free to get dramatic; for instance, act out the agony of hearing a friend gush over the ending of a book you didn’t finish because you were too tired to read more than a few pages at a time.

Share motivating anecdotes.
Offer diverse stamina role models. Talk about your fitness routine, research the endurance-building rituals of a famous pro athlete, or discuss how stamina is integral to kids’ particular interests. Ask a kid who struggles with reading but excels in something else, like karate or pottery, to share how they stick with their pursuits to reach success. It makes for a meaningful, relatable analogy and a confidence boost. Additionally, read aloud books in which characters persevere over time and connect it to kids’ reading stamina challenges and growth. (See some favorite picks below.)

Set goals and track them.
We all like to see ourselves making progress. Set incremental goals, such as gradually building up uninterrupted minutes of reading each day and chart progress individually or as a group. It’s best to start with small and achievable goals to experience immediate success and work up from there. (No kids are more proud—or more excited for the next challenge—than the kindergarten class getting praised because they achieved TWO WHOLE MINUTES of uninterrupted reading.)

Be ready for roadblocks.
Anticipate what will make sustained reading challenging, based on kids’ ages and personalities, and prepare a strategy. If a kid “needs” to get up for drinks or the bathroom every two minutes or can’t resist chatting, then set a time for these things in advance or after a set amount of reading time. For kids discouraged by longer books, help them plan breakpoints, such as the end of a chapter or at a specific page number. For kids who tire from difficult reading, give them resources and reading strategies they can call upon, such as a bookmark listing ways to solve hard words.

Bring out the cool tools.
Kids love gear, and the right tool can be golden. For kids who like gadgets, let them be in charge of setting a watch or a timer. In the classroom, project a fun countdown on your wall, so kids know how close they are to their reading time goal. Or, use fun bookmarks to mark an end goal page. Offer a cozy pillow or special seat to be used only during reading time. Just make sure you talk about using items as tools without letting them become distractions.

Always have the next book ready.
Building reading stamina isn’t just about learning to read more challenging material and for longer amounts of time; it’s about sticking with reading as a habit for the long haul. For this to happen, kids need continued access to books that feel satisfying to read. For new readers, this means having a supply of books that offer just the right amount of challenge. As kids progress, they are usually impressed by the length of books. Help them feel like they are reading lots and lots with a graphic novel that moves quickly. For older students, a compelling novel in verse often has less text per page, making it go at a gratifying pace. For all kids, finding a series they enjoy is a huge win. Have the next installment waiting for non-stop reading!

Congrats, you are going to be a guest reader in your child’s classroom! While this is such an exciting opportunity to make a special memory with your child and their classmates, it can also feel a bit intimidating. Do not fear! I’m here to help guide you through having the best guest reading experience possible with a few tips and book recommendations packed with kid appeal!

1. Choose a book you feel comfortable with.
Picking one of your child’s favorites can be a great decision unless they love super silly books and that’s not your style. If you are not into doing funny voices and prefer something more low-key, don’t be afraid to try a nonfiction picture book or biography. Kids love learning about new facts!

2. Bring a back-up or two.
Depending on the amount of time you have to read and the length of the book, you may finish your book quickly and have time for another. Most students love a bonus book.

3. Preview the book first.
Reading through the story ahead of time will not only help you feel more comfortable and know when to pause for reactions, it will also help avoid any unwanted surprises.

4. Know some classroom management tools ahead of time.
If the students become excited and begin yelling out or talking loudly, speak in a softer voice, so that they have to quiet down to hear you. If another student comments that they have read the book before, encourage them to look for a new detail this time.

5. Read with expression.
No one wants to listen to a robot reading. Bring the story alive with your voice making sure to change your tone depending on what is happening in the story. If you feel comfortable, use different voices for the characters. The sillier the better.

6. Show the pictures.
This may seem obvious, but can also be overlooked in the moment. Seeing the illustrations are critical when reading a picture book, so it may be helpful to practice holding the book up and reading from it at home to ensure you feel at ease showing the pictures while reading aloud.

7. Have fun!
It is such a treat for your child to have you in their classroom. If you relax and have a good time, the students will too. All that really matters to your child is that you are there. Take a deep breath and enjoy the special moment.

As for book recommendations, below is a list of tried-and-true favorites that I’ve found to be big hits with children. With stories full of imagination, comical situations, or inspirational true tales, there is a little something here for everyone.

This award-winning book is a visual storytelling masterpiece. It is almost impossible not to react while watching two friends narrowly miss bigger and bigger gems as they dig in their backyard. Be sure to point out the differences where Sam and Dave start and end for an interesting discussion!

9780525555094 Fauja Singh Keeps Going by Simran Jeet Singh, illustrated by Baljinder Kaur

9780593350669 How to Talk Like a Bear by Charlie Grandy, illustrated by Alex G. Griffiths

Prepare for giggles while reading this hilarious new interactive book that encourages children to roar like a bear at varying volume levels.

The story of how a young girl named Joan Procter pursued her passion for reptiles to become a renown expert in Komodo dragons and the first female curator for reptiles at the British Museum is utterly fascinating.

9780525552918 If I Built a School by Chris Van Dusen

With an imagination bigger than life, Jack shares his dreams of designing his own school. This entertaining tale is packed with kid appeal and will inspire fun conversations about what children will want to include in their own inventive schools.

9780399255144 The Three Ninja Pigs by Corey Rosen Schwartz, illustrated by Dan Santat

Filled with funny puns, this action-packed fractured fairy tale puts an exciting new spin on an old classic. When an intimidating wolf comes knocking on their door, three pigs train at their local dojo, but it is only the hardworking sister who can save the day.

9780593563229 Ice Cream Man by Glenda Armand and Kim Freeman, illustrated by Keith Mallett

This entertaining picture book biography shares how chef Augustus Jackson not only achieved his dream of cooking for the President of the United States, but also tells the story of how he went on to develop new ice cream flavors that we still enjoy today!

9781682630594 Madeline Finn and the Library Dog by Lisa Papp

This sweet and tender story stars Madeline Finn, a struggling reader who ultimately finds success and confidence after reading to a dog at a library program. Both relatable and heartfelt, this adorable story will strike a chord with many.

9781368084116 Hey, Bruce! by Ryan T. Higgins

Interactive books are always a crowd pleaser and this one starring the hilariously grumpy bear from the best-selling Mother Bruce series is a real winner. Readers are invited to help Bruce fall back to sleep by moving the book around with comical results.

9780763695156 Mesmerized by Mara Rockliff, illustrated by Iacopo Bruno

28 Fun and Creative Ways To Connect With Your Grandchildren https://www.readbrightly.com/fun-creative-ways-connect-with-your-grandchildren/ https://www.readbrightly.com/fun-creative-ways-connect-with-your-grandchildren/#respond Fri, 08 Sep 2023 09:00:46 +0000 https://www.readbrightly.com/?p=81660 Here are some unique ideas for how grandparents can stay connected with their grandchildren, whether they live near or far.

The post 28 Fun and Creative Ways To Connect With Your Grandchildren appeared first on Brightly.

]]>
My grandmother and mother were the epitome of grandmothers at their best—cheerleaders, mentors, gentle teachers, encouragers, passionate advocates, and prayer-coverers. My loving grandmother always thought I could do anything and supported me all my life, and my mother has championed and loved my own children well. They both inspired me to write my newest children’s book, Nana the Great Comes to Visit.

Nearly everyone has discovered the gift of video conferencing — and almost everyone recommends it for weekly connection, if not more — but I wanted to share some unique ideas to connect with grandchildren, whether they’re near or far. I’m filing these options away for future use when I get to be a Nana! (Or Gramma. Or Mimi. I haven’t decided what my handle will be!)

IF YOU LIVE NEARBY

 1. Start a family text thread to share fun things every day — from funny videos to things you see.
 1. Figure out silly face filters on Facetime or Snapchat — kids love to laugh!
 1. Create an annual Gramma/Grampa Camp and have a special overnight (or two) and full day together doing something really fun. Eat at least one meal out at a restaurant of the child’s choice (or make their favorite at home).
 1. Have a weekly date with each local grandchild — two hours where you eat together and do something special. Kids share things in the car that they don’t at home. Make the most of it!
 1. Don’t just park your grandkids in front of a movie; watch it with them and get to know the characters and themes. Then, when they’ve watched it another 10 times, you’ll have a common reference point for chats.
 1. Do the Home Depot Kids Workshop together once a month.
 1. Remember how tired you were when you were a young parent? That’s your kids. So when the grandkids come over, do what most parents don’t have the energy to do: a special craft. Make a fort that takes over the whole living room. Break out the Play-doh. Fingerpaint. Even venture into slime and glitter. Work on a puzzle. Grandparents don’t pay much attention to mess (or figure it’s worth it), and that makes that time/activity special.
 1. Figure out a monthly “mystery adventure,” where you do something oriented to your grandchild’s interest and let them choose where you eat. Make it a rule that parents can’t know where you’re going or what you’re doing until the child comes home to fill them in.
 1. Invest in some old-fashioned board games to play. Lincoln Logs and LEGOs, too.
 1. Once a month, take each grandchild to “special breakfast” for one-on-one time.
 1. Create a scavenger hunt in your yard or house, leading to a special prize.
 1. Buy “adventures” rather than things for your grandchild—membership to a zoo, children’s museum, botanical garden, or activity center.
 1. As kids get older, they get busier; commit to driving them to one practice a week and staying for it. It connects you to their daily life (and the parents will be so thankful!).

IF YOU LIVE FAR AWAY

 1. Send care packages—birthdays, holidays, and sometimes “just because.”
 1. Weekly tea—share a cup and read them a book via Zoom, Skype, or Facetime! (The House Party app also allows Apple and Android users to connect.)
 1. Send a weekly card or note; kids love getting mail! Fun postcards with pictures are especially popular.
 1. Encourage your kids to send daily pics of the grandkids via text, just so you can see how life “feels” day-to-day and have something to talk about with the grandchildren—whether they’re sick or playing a sport or just winning at their favorite video game.
 1. Consider paying for the child to fly out to you (parents can take them to the gate, and you can get permission to meet a minor at the gate on the far side) and spend a week together every summer; such a tradition will live long in their hearts.
 1. Have a standing, weekly video phone date, so kids are mentally ready to engage and look forward to it.
 1. The Messenger Kids app has parent-guard filters, so it’s a safe app for them to use; establish and share a daily kid-friendly joke to make them giggle!
 1. Game Pigeon app allows you to play games like Uno, Battleship, and more together from afar! Or you can play Yahtzee or Farkle with them online.
 1. Create a family picture album that is baby-friendly, so they get to know your faces from the start.
 1. Send a goodie box before each holiday; fill with dollar-store items as well as a new book and a homemade treat.
 1. Create an airline fare watch so you can hop on a plane and go see them at least twice a year. Try to be present for big occasions. When you go, send Mom and Dad on a date on your dime—because it’s a gift to them and a gift to you to have time alone with your grandchild.
 1. Hallmark has recordable storybooks—record a few and send them to your grandchild so they know your voice.
 1. For kids abroad, you can buy books and send them for free via bookdepository.com.
 1. See if Mom or Dad is game to bake the same cake in separate kitchens at the same time. Then share a piece “together”!
 1. Buy a digital photo frame for each household and send one another pictures from your daily lives to keep it fresh for the other party.

We talk about books being passports to new worlds … but library cards are like intergalactic passports to the multiverse! All of my friends have heard me wax poetic about the magic of the inter-library loan and the super ID card that allows me to borrow books from the Brooklyn, Queen, and New York Public Library systems — and for good reason. A library card makes so much available, usually for free, to people of all ages.

Check out some of these little-known library card perks that go way beyond checking out books:

1. Learn a language. Studies have shown that language learning offers cognitive benefits and the potential for greater academic achievement. And isn’t it just fun to know how to greet people in three different ways? “Hello” in Spanish, Urdu, French, Pashto, and Arabic are just a few clicks away, as public libraries offer access to software like Living Language, Mango Languages, and Rosetta Stone. (Contact your local library for details.)

2. Find a job or start your business. Local libraries offer seminars, one-on-one career counseling, resume help, financial literacy workshops, use of laptops and other technology, and more. SCORE, which offers small business mentoring and coaching, offers in-library support to budding entrepreneurs from professional executives across multiple industries.

3. Dance it out! If you’re not into the gym scene, your local library might be just the place to get your workout on and grab a great read to enjoy after you collapse at home, post-Zumba. Many branches offer exercise, dance, and movement classes for all ages.

4. Make a mess. Create and innovate! Knitters, paper artists, and makers of all ages can join crafty clubs or think of their local libraries as high-tech makerspaces (many libraries have 3D printers, the latest software, and more). Young children can have fun with glue sticks, pom poms, and glitter not at home, and everyone can let their imaginations run free.

5. Make a friend. Sign up to tutor, be a reading buddy, or volunteer! Friends are to be had everywhere at the library. And you’ll know you have at least one thing in common — an interest in learning!

6. Get the scoop. Catch up on current events from everywhere and every time period. You can peruse newspapers and magazines from all over, including through digital archives that offer material that comes from all over the world and is hundreds of years old.

7. Get your game on. Usually, we’re trying to get everyone outside and away from the video games. But the library is a budget-friendly way to provide access to games and like-minded people for social and safe gaming experiences.

8. Test some tech. Thinking about an e-Reader but not sure which one will work for you? Know you’re a big vacation reader but don’t have room in your bags for those thick paperbacks? Lucky for you, your library card gives you access to e-Books and might even offer e-Reader “rentals” that come pre-loaded with software, databases, and more. Many libraries also offer kids access to online resources like the educational site BrainPop and Tumblebooks, a database of animated, audio-enhanced picture books.

9. Get cultured. Sip some lemonade while you listen to a string quartet. Rock out with a kid-friendly band. Learn about an author’s life and inspirations during a guest lecture or event. Many libraries host speakers, orchestras, theatre troupes, puppet shows, and more.

10. Do your paperwork. Okay, paperwork is not actually fun for most people … but it’s necessary. IRS forms are available at local libraries. At some larger libraries, like the main branch of the Brooklyn Public Library, you can also apply for a passport (and take the photo), or use Notary Public Services. Who knew?

11. Go somewhere else. The learning doesn’t end when you leave the library! In many areas, like Boston and Seattle, your card can get you free or discounted passes to museums and local attractions.

And of course, the library is always a wonderful place to enjoy the quiet camaraderie of other patrons browsing, reading, and reveling. There’s all kinds of fun available to you at your local library all year long — including lots and lots of great books, and expert librarians to curate them and to show you all the magic your card can bring.

Many kids like to touch stuff … a lot. Sensory play allows them to dig into open-ended materials by pouring, scooping, splashing, squeezing, and experiencing all the resulting sensations. Sensory play is fantastic on its own, with no direction needed. But linking books and sensory experiences can be an excellent strategy for making it even more engaging. Thumbing through a treasured book when your kid is elbow-deep in a tub of shaving cream or wet sand may seem weird, but it’s very effective. Here are four fun and easy ways to link books and sensory play at home or in the classroom.

Keep little hands busy during a read-aloud
If you have a kiddo who struggles to sit still during storytime, you don’t have to give up on reading aloud. Try setting up your child with a (relatively non-messy) sensory play opportunity, like a ball of play dough and a rolling pin or a few toy cars in a pan filled with gravel. Then, sit nearby and crack open a favorite title. When kids’ hands are occupied, their ears and brains are often more available to listen.

Retell a story
Acting out a book’s story is fun for kids and supports their growing comprehension skills. A sensory table or bin (e.g., a low plastic storage container or a baking pan with sides) is great for containing simple supplies to do this on repeat. Scatter some dried beans for the “ground,” add some straw, sticks, and LEGO bricks, and kids can happily build and knock down the Three Little Pigs’ houses.

Raid your collection of figurines for characters, but don’t sweat it if you don’t have exact matches to a book. You can buy a cheap set of plain wooden peg people at a craft store and proclaim them to be anyone you’d like. Alternatively, kids think it’s hilarious to sub in the figurines you have and pretend they are the book’s characters.

Make up new stories with book characters
Retelling a story as it appears in the book is just the beginning. Sensory materials are perfect for encouraging kids to invent spinoff stories. After reading a book, gather small toys that (sort of) match the book’s characters and add them to a sensory base, like sand, water, shaving cream, oats, beans, or rice. Let kids’ imaginations do the rest. Using plastic farm animals and a tiny tractor, they might dream up fresh adventures inspired by the story of Otis. Or, you can explore riffs on Where Do Diggers Sleep at Night? with some small vehicles and fabric scraps for blankets.

A popular twist on making up new stories is the “ice rescue.” Freeze a collection of animals or figurines that fit a book’s theme in a container of water. (A set of plastic woodland animals and a stack of Jan Brett winter books go a long way.) Put the ice block on a tray or in a container and give kids tools to melt the ice and “rescue” the characters. A spoon or dropper and a cup of warm water do the trick.

Explore a STEM Concept
Some books introduce scenarios that beg further investigation through sensory play. For example, plastic animals and a turkey baster are perfect for acting out how Elephant sucks up all the water in Get Out of My Bath! Ditto for books about sand castles; building a mini sand castle, like the one in The Sandcastle That Lola Built, and knocking it down with a wave of bath water brings the story to life.

Snow books are also fun to extend with sensory materials. You can use real snow, shaving cream, cotton balls, or flour, if you don’t mind the extra mess. Kids love to act out animals buried in snow, like in So Much Snow!

Many books lend themselves to sensory play. Don’t worry about Instagram-worthy setups or perfectly matched supplies. Use what you already have to get kids exploring book ideas with their hands.

My fifth-grader’s reading log is killing me.

In the years my sons have been in school, they haven’t always had to fill out weekly reading logs, but when they’ve had to? Sometimes they work like magic, keeping the boys motivated to find and finish books. And sometimes they dampen that same motivation, turning at least one kid who’d happily read on his own into someone worried about the exact number of pages finished or minutes spent reading. Ah, but there’s a prize. In this case, this year, the fifth-grader is holding out for the promise of a bag of chips after he turns in several weeks of stellar signed logs. Grrr!

Then there’s our library’s summer program. I have fond memories of telling the librarian all about the books I read in exchange for nothing more than pasting stickers on a card. My kids get stickers … and trinkets, and coupons for fast food.

What’s up with all the reading rewards?

It seems to me that, while accountability is a good thing, gifts that go beyond what reading should offer them — that is, the pure joy of finishing an absorbing story and moving on to the next — don’t work for every kid, all the time. That said, incentives can work, if used judiciously.

Here’s how to know what’s a smart reward and what might morph into an exercise in frustration:

They work if they’re small and immediate: An itty-bitty reward (stickers on a chart, a pencil, a certificate) can be just the thing to prompt a reluctant reader to crack a book, says Susan Teeter, a school librarian in South Huntington, New York. Strong readers, she adds, will read with or without the promise of prizes, though some avid readers will up their game even for something like pencils.

Best practice: Key the reward to reading itself, by offering incentives such as a new book, a magazine, or — in school — free time, a homework pass, or extra reading time.

They work when they’re collaborative: For the past several years, middle school English teacher Jessica Godios, in Fredonia, New York, has run a team-based contest to get her students reading. “We track points on charts hung on the wall. At the end of the quarter, the team with the most points wins a prize,” she says. “I also reward individuals who read above and beyond, even if the rest of their group was not as motivated.”

Best practice: At home, you could try a pile-up-the-pages team-reading approach with your kids (and yourself!). A certain number of pages/books read, and the whole family gets a treat, like a movie or dinner at a favorite spot.

They work if they’re not too easy to get: Take those library summer reading programs. They’re fun, sure, but if the expectations are low (in terms of the number of books or pages kids need to complete), and they offer too many prizes, “The kids look forward to the reward more than the reading, and I question how many kids are really reading the books,” says Teeter.

Best practice: Know your own kid. If she’s struggling, applaud her progress through the program. But if it seems too easy for your super-fast reader, add some challenges yourself, such as asking him to write a review.

They work if they’re tied to the books themselves: In Jessica Godios’s classes, kids watch book trailers for age-appropriate favorites to get them interested. “At the end of the year, students create their own trailers for their favorite book,” says Godios.

Best practice: Offering kids more of the type of books they seem most interested in might just be the best incentive of all.

Every classroom library should be well-stocked with graphic novels. Beyond being ideal for kids’ independent reading, graphic novels also have tons of potential as teaching tools.

(And let’s clear it up right now for those of us who grew up hiding our comic books inside “real” books: reading graphic novels is authentic reading! Graphic novels are full of opportunities to think about characterization, themes, mood, tone, etc.)

Check out these teacher-tested ways to use graphic novels as teaching tools.

Use graphic novels to challenge kids to think critically about books.
Graphic novels can motivate reluctant or struggling readers. More than that, the visual content encourages all kids to think about literature in new ways. The Flamingo by Guojing is a stunning, almost wordless graphic novel about a girl who visits her grandmother. Lao Lao treats her granddaughter to a captivating story-within-the-story about the origins of a mysterious flamingo feather. This rich and complex book is ideal for talking with kids about how to make inferences.

By introducing critical thinking and comprehension concepts with graphic novels, readers need to make only a short leap to applying similar skills to other types of books. Try discussion questions like:

 • How do the text and art work together to help you know what is happening?
 • What can you infer about the characters’ emotions from these panels?
 • Why do you think the author decided on these words/panel layout/angle/font type/color scheme? How does that choice help you as a reader?

Use graphic novels to introduce citing text evidence.
Graphic novels are an ideal way to introduce the idea of referring to text evidence to support one’s reasoning — a significant theme in state and national standards that can be tricky for kids. Narrowing down “how you know” something to a particular panel, and narrowing that down further to specific words or visual details, can feel more straightforward to kids than having to search an entire page of written text.

Use a graphic novel as a unique whole-class read.
With the inevitable variety of students’ reading levels, interests, and proficiency in English, whole-class reads can be hard to get right. The Yale Center for Dyslexia and Creativity called graphic novels “grand equalizers,” which is a pretty fantastic way to think about their potential in the classroom.

Having your entire class read a graphic novel can make a book accessible to all readers and give them much to talk about. For discussion-worthy themes and broad appeal, try Hoops by Matt Tavares, which is based on the true story of an Indiana girls’ basketball team in the early days of Title IX. (The author’s note, in which Tavares talks about why he used a graphic novel format for this story, makes for a meaningful class discussion.)

Use graphic novels to amplify content area learning.
The engaging format and visual elements of graphic novels make them perfect for bringing science and social studies content and vocabulary to life for kids. There are tons of informational graphic novels on the market for all reading levels. Check out Santiago! by Jay Hosler to challenge stereotypes of how people become scientists. (The “father of modern neuroscience” was definitely not a nerd!) The new Who HQ Graphic Novel series has a diverse list of nonfiction for early-mid elementary readers.

You can also use stories set in a particular time, place, or around a certain theme to build background knowledge that supports your content area focus topics. When Stars Are Scattered by Victoria Jamieson and Omar Mohamed gives kids an unparalleled look at life in a refugee camp. Little Monarchs by Jonathan Case is a dystopian story that weaves in factual information about monarch butterfly migration and raises important questions about human impact on the environment.

Pair graphic novels with traditional literature.
Try having kids read the graphic novel version of a classic title before, concurrently with, or after reading the original version. Or, have different small groups read each edition and compare notes. Turtle In Paradise by Jennifer L. Holm and Savanna Ganucheau is an ideal choice for this.

Pairing a traditional title with its graphic novel spinoff allows kids to compare and contrast content and genre features. For instance, when studying point of view, first read the prose version of the modern classic Wonder by R.J. Palacio. It’s about Auggie, a boy with a facial difference. Then, move on to the author’s graphic novel version of White Bird, told from the point of view of Auggie’s classroom bully Julian, as he learns about his Jewish family’s history in Nazi-occupied France.

Use graphic novels as mentor texts for writing.
A successful graphic novel requires an exceptional amount of precision. Studying the graphic novel format and writing their own comic book encourages kids to search for the right words, use punctuation effectively, and think about the relationship between words and art. Kids do not need to create an entire novel to reap the benefits. Try having kids summarize a traditional reading assignment by turning the story into a comic strip or creating a series of panels to explain a science concept, event from history, or personal experience.
