In their world of sometimes-dull textbooks and term papers on often pre-assigned topics, it’s natural for teens to flock to fiction in their spare time. But they would be remiss to overlook some of the amazing nonfiction works that are equally captivating, thought-provoking, and even worldview-affecting. Here are 20 extra-compelling nonfiction books for teens that span all kinds of interests and curiosities.

no no 9781984849663 A Quantum Life (Adapted for Young Adults) by Hakeem Oluseyi and Joshua Horwitz

James Edward Plummer was a brilliant boy stuck in a bad situation. His high I.Q. and impoverished childhood were at odds with each other, which pushed him to find a bizarre balance between the two. After developing a drug addiction and getting accepted into the Physics Ph.D. program at Stanford University, James found a mentor who helped him tip the scales of his life into one of success. His inspiring story is a must-read!

9781984829801 The Faraway Brothers (Adapted for Young Adults) https://www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/595190/the-far-away-brothers-adapted-for-young-adults-by-lauren-markham/?ref=PRH06C9ECE222&aid=randohouseinc22957-20&linkid=PRH06C9ECE222 by Lauren Markham

A remarkable story of brotherhood, immigration, and finding home, The Faraway Brothers follows the lives of 17-year-old twins Ernesto and Raúl Flores, who are forced to flee El Salvador for America after being targeted by a local gang. While the journey itself is harrowing, so too are their lives as undocumented migrants. Ernesto and Raúl must adapt to all-new surroundings and anxiously await their immigration court hearing, all while experiencing the typical trials of adolescence.

9781838749101 An Illustrated History of Urban Legends by Adam Allsuch Boardman

Whether you love spooky urban legends or bizarre local lore, this book features some of the best stories and their histories. Vibrant illustrations and plenty of conspiracies, myths, and legends make this book a must-read for any reader who loves falling down weird rabbit holes.

9780593177044 Just Mercy (Adapted for Young Adults) by Bryan Stevenson

Through his work with the Equal Justice Initiative, attorney Bryan Stevenson fights every day for the vulnerable and wrongfully imprisoned, and also to reveal the inequities and racial bias of America’s criminal justice system. This YA adaptation of his bestseller — now a film starring Michael B. Jordan and Jamie Foxx — relays the stories of Stevenson’s clients and how they wound up in the system. An eye-opening and galvanizing read.

9780593643563 The Swans of Harlem (Adapted for Young Adults) by Karen Valby

During the civil rights movement, The Dance Theater of Harlem made history as its members appeared on magazine covers, performed around the world, and blazed a trail on and off the stage. This nonfiction book spotlights five of these dancers and how their hard work and determination paved the way for Black ballerinas to have an equal chance at the spotlight.

9780525555414 Flowers in the Gutter by K. R. Gaddy

The tale of the Edelweiss Pirates reads like the most thrilling of war fiction, yet it’s the result of historian K. R. Gaddy’s meticulous research. These weren’t your typical pirates — rather, they were working-class German teenagers risking their lives to resist the Nazis during World War II. Their refusal of complacency, even as the Gestapo pursued and arrested them, is something we could all learn from.

9780593323991 American Wings by Sherri L. Smith and Elizabeth Wein

This book offers a fascinating look at aviation history and civil rights in the years between World War I and World War II. As aviation fever took hold in America, many young pilots dreamed of taking to the skies. Faced with prejudice in traditional aviation schools, a group of Black pilots started a flying club and airfield near Chicago. With World War II came an increased demand for pilots, and their school trained young men of all backgrounds to fly and fight for their country.

9780451471222 Bonnie and Clyde by Karen Blumenthal

Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow have gone down in history (by their first names, at least), but in her part-biography, part-true crime narrative, journalist Karen Blumenthal pauses to ask — how did these two poor teens from west Texas wind up as outlaws in the first place? The result of her curiosity is a fascinating and heart-pounding tale of love and crime set against the backdrop of the Great Depression. A page-turner, indeed.

9781635928051 American Spirits by Barb Rosenstock

In 1848, Kate and Maggie Fox claimed they could talk to the spirit that haunted their home. Guided by their older sister, Leah, the girls quickly rose to fame and fortune as they communed with spirits on the other side. However, as their reputation as mediums grew, so did the backlash from the press. This fascinating nonfiction book will captivate, thrill, and educate YA readers.

9780593649091 Hick by Sarah Miller

In Hick, readers are offered a meticulously researched and deeply engaging YA exploration of Lorena Hickok’s journey to becoming a celebrated journalist and Eleanor Roosevelt’s confidante and lover. Sarah Miller masterfully weaves a narrative that feels as compelling as any work of fiction, painting an intimate and well-rounded portrait of Hick, Eleanor, and their significant relationship. A must-read for fans of women’s history.

9781536213676 One in a Million: A Graphic Memoir by Claire Lordon

When Claire was a teenager, she became ill, and nobody could figure out what was wrong with her. After multiple visits to various doctors and clinics, she learned that she had a brain tumor. This heartfelt graphic novel memoir follows the ups and downs of juggling her medical journey and everyday life as a teenager.

9781101911761 We Should All Be Feminists http://www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/246919/we-should-all-be-feminists-by-chimamanda-ngozi-adichie/?ref=PRH06C9ECE222&aid=randohouseinc22957-20&linkid=PRH06C9ECE222 by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie

In December 2015, it was announced that every 16-year-old in Sweden would be given a copy of this book. Adapted from Adichie’s award-winning TEDx Talk of the same name (which blew up after Beyoncé sampled it), the book is a great stepping stone for discussions on gender roles and equity. Drawing from Adichie’s own experiences, it’s a key read for young women and men as they navigate the future together.

9781536230161 Wearing My Mother’s Heart by Sophia Thakur

For teens who love poetry, this heartfelt collection is a must-read. Sophia Thakur weaves together the narratives of three generations of women, their hopes, dreams, loves, and deepest thoughts. This poignant and thought-provoking book received a starred review and was named School Library Journal Best Book of the Year in 2023.

9780375867828 The Family Romanov: Murder, Rebellion, and the Fall of Imperial Russia http://www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/205287/the-family-romanov-murder-rebellion-and-the-fall-of-imperial-russia-by-candace-fleming/9780375867828/?ref=PRH06C9ECE222&aid=randohouseinc22957-20&linkid=PRH06C9ECE222 by Candace Fleming

If truth is stranger than fiction, the Romanovs still get some kind of prize. Any teen who claims history is boring should get their hands on this book. (Adults should, too!) Fleming writes about Russia’s last royal family and its downfall in a gripping way, covering every spot of doom in its gilded halls (while also tending to the lives of the poor Russian masses). Fans of reality show drama will hold today’s camera-ready families to a much higher drama standard after reading this book.

9781536224214 Work with What You Got: A Memoir by Zion Clark and James S. Hirsch

Zion Clark was born without legs to an imprisoned and drug-addicted mother. In foster care, he experienced abuse and neglect but also found supportive allies who recognized his potential and supported his dreams. Through perseverance and grit, Zion became a renowned wheelchair racer, wrestler, and a contestant on America’s Got Talent. His memoir will inspire teen readers to reach their full potential.

9780763687557 Honor Girl https://www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/258459/honor-girl-by-maggie-thrash/?ref=PRH06C9ECE222&aid=randohouseinc22957-20&linkid=PRH06C9ECE222 by Maggie Thrash

The best memoirs are those that make you feel like the writer is a potential friend, even if their story is one that’s unfamiliar. In the case of Thrash’s graphic novel — a romantic, honest, and funny account of her falling hard for her female summer-camp counselor — the story does more than make you want to be one of Thrash’s friends. It makes you want to have under-the-stars big conversations with the ones you already have.

9780593181560 Hanged! by Sarah Miller

Mary Surratt owned the boardinghouse where John Wilkes Booth and his co-conspirators regularly gathered. So, when Booth assassinated President Abraham Lincoln, Mary Surratt was found guilty of treason and became the first woman executed by the United States government. This book dives into the details of the assassination and whether Surratt was involved in the plot or was the victim of a terrible misfortune.

9781465437990 The Movie Book https://www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/533188/the-movie-book-by-dk/?ref=PRH06C9ECE222&aid=randohouseinc22957-20&linkid=PRH06C9ECE222 by DK

Part of DK’s Big Ideas series, The Movie Book is a do-it-all compendium of movie history and looks at how films have fit into society. Examining 100 films from the silent era onward (and spanning all genres, from The Wizard of Oz to Vertigo to Pulp Fiction), the book’s profiles include great lines, historical significance, and mini-biographies of key industry players. Any teen movie buff will be drawn instantly to the must-see content and — in this age of streaming — may be inclined to seek out older, harder-to-get fare for a true picture of movie-making’s multifaceted history.

9780593481486 Devotion (Young Readers Edition) by Adam Makos

Adapted from the adult book with the same title, this true story follows two pilots from different backgrounds as they forge an unbreakable bond during the Korean War. When one of them gets shot down behind enemy lines, the other risks everything to find and rescue him. Readers who enjoy true stories about unbreakable bonds and brotherhood will love this inspiring account.

9780593480069 Death in the Jungle by Candace Fleming

Teens will be mesmerized by this riveting account of Jim Jones and his notorious cult, Peoples Temple. Jones recruited hundreds of followers by promising them equality and happiness before moving them from California to Guyana, South America. When the authorities started closing in, Jones convinced over 900 of his devout followers to drink poisoned punch. Chilling, heartbreaking, and impossible to set down, this well-researched book will keep readers enthralled from beginning to end.

Who will be the next hero in the 40th book of the Ordinary People Change the World series? You decide! Choose between six options:

 • Maya Angelou
 • LeBron James
 • Steven Spielberg
 • Taylor Swift
 • Serena Williams
 • The Wright Brothers

Cast your vote between now and April 27 by visiting YourHeroYourVote.com.

Oddly (or perhaps appropriately) enough, the Ordinary People Change the World series of picture book biographies began with a fairly common observation: Brad Meltzer, who has penned a number of bestselling adult thrillers, noticed his daughter’s clothing options all featured fictional heroes, including those of the princess variety. But instead of sigh and move on, Meltzer decided that if kids were going to have heroes, why not give them some real ones? In January 2014, the series launched with I am Abraham Lincoln and I am Amelia Earhart.

During their prime read-to-me years, little kids are apt to fall in love with the characters in their favorite picture books — and these real figures are a good place to start. Each Ordinary People Change the World story is told in a kid-friendly, conversational way and the back of each book includes a timeline of the subject’s life to inspire more learning.

Here are some of the best Ordinary People Change the World books featuring some of the most interesting “ordinary” people in world history:

yes yes Ordinary People Who Took a Stand

Kids can learn a lot from brave souls who worked to make the world more equal, even when it was at great personal risk. They’ll find much to admire in these bold thinkers and doers.

9780803740853 I am Rosa Parks 9780525428527 I am Martin Luther King Jr. 9780735228719 I am Harriet Tubman 9780735228740 I am Billie Jean King 9780525428510 I am Helen Keller 9780735228702 I am Gandhi 9780593533338 I am Ruth Bader Ginsburg 9780593405888 I am Malala Yousafzai yes yes Ordinary People from Early American History

If your child has an interest in how our country came to be our country, it’s key that they get a sense of the heroes who helped form it. So far, the early American history entries to the series include two presidents and one Native American trailblazer who guided an expedition West.

9780803740839 I am Abraham Lincoln 9780525428534 I am Sacagawea 9780525428480 I am George Washington yes yes Ordinary People Who Went First

It’s hard not to be inspired by people who heard, “It’s never been done!” and pushed forward anyway. These figures rightfully wouldn’t take no for an answer and leveraged qualities like exceptional daring and hard work to be the first in their fields.

9780803740860 I am Jackie Robinson 9780803740822 I am Amelia Earhart 9780735228733 I am Sonia Sotomayor 9780735228726 I am Neil Armstrong yes yes Ordinary People Who Shaped Science

You could call it the “Finding Nemo” effect, but that wouldn’t be true; kids have always been fascinated by the world under the sea. Maybe it’s that it looks so different from what’s above ground, or that ocean life is its own rainbow. Or maybe I’m getting too poetic. Maybe my son just loves all things aquatic because he doesn’t yet have permission to go hang out underwater alone. Whatever the case, these 11 books are great for little ones enamored with marine life.

The thing about our little ones is this: It feels like they can (and do) spend a lot of time crying, whining, wailing, and throwing tantrums. But another, more wonderful, thing about our little ones is: Wow, can they laugh. They are excellent at it, and it’s fairly easy to get a chuckle out of them. (Though I admit that coming up with new voices for inanimate objects can get put a lot of pressure on a person.)

Maybe the quickest way to prompt a baby’s belly laugh, a toddler’s infectious giggles, or a kindergartner’s shrieks of delight is by reading aloud a silly picture book. Even the least performative of parents can get a laugh from these picks, but throw in some silly voices and, well, you may just feel like a bonafide professional comedian.

Laughs on the go!

9780385389860 I Will Chomp You! by Jory John, illustrated by Bob Shea

Kids know id. And any character with a very simple wish and a desire to have something all to itself equals instant comedy, particularly if that character is a monster getting increasingly crazed at protecting his or her PRIZED POSSESSION! Kids will crack up at the chomper-in-question’s agitated state as they get closer to eyeballing the monster’s top-secret treasure. (And they’ll no doubt identify with the monster, who’s been hiding a very elaborate cake the whole time. YUM.)

11 Mermaid Books To Enchant Young Adult Readers https://www.readbrightly.com/young-adult-mermaid-books/ https://www.readbrightly.com/young-adult-mermaid-books/#respond Wed, 21 Jun 2023 09:00:07 +0000 https://www.readbrightly.com/?p=98034 Stories about magical, mystical mermaids are perfect reads for teens to dive into at the beach or poolside.

The post 11 Mermaid Books To Enchant Young Adult Readers appeared first on Brightly.

]]>
Mermaids have been an object of fascination long before Disney’s Ariel became the most famous of their representatives. The first known appearance of a mermaid in literature was in 1000 B.C. in Assyria. The ancient Greeks and Romans often included the mysterious creatures in their myths. Pirates also claimed to see mermaids at sea, and the half-fish, half-woman beings are part of many countries’ lore. Mermaids are magical, charming, and dangerous, so it’s no surprise that teens love reading books about them. Here are several YA mermaid books to reel in teen readers.

yes no YA Books 9780593120972 Skin of the Sea by Natasha Bowen

As a mermaid responsible for collecting the souls of those who die at sea, Simi knows her role and how not to upset the gods. But when a human boy falls overboard, she saves his life rather than letting him perish, setting herself up for punishment. To avoid that fate, she has to make a plea to the Supreme Creator on a journey threaded with peril. This fresh take on The Little Mermaid weaves in West African history and lore, earning it multiple starred reviews.

9780593120989 Soul of the Deep by Natasha Bowen

This sequel to Bowen’s Skin of the Sea finds Simi now reigning — in a way — over the Land of the Dead. It’s her fate after sacrificing everything to save the people she loves. Simi works with a trickster god in a last-ditch effort to prevent demons from overtaking the human world. As with Bowen’s first entry in the series, this book weaves fairy tales with West African lore. Reviewers praised it for building on the characters in the first book and introducing new adversaries for Simi.

9781368077224 The Little Mermaid: Against the Tide by J. Elle

J. Elle, author of the Wings of Ebony duology and the highly anticipated fall 2023 release House of Marionne, pens this young adult story set in the world of the new Disney adaptation of The Little Mermaid. Somewhat distant from one another since the death of their mother, Ariel’s sisters come together for her fifteenth birthday celebration. But Mala — one of Triton’s most formidable daughters — gets kidnapped, leaving behind a cryptic note about their mother’s mysterious death. Ariel and her sisters set out to save their sister and find the truth about their mother. It’s a must-read for fans of the new film and mermaid lore in general.

9781536209594 Mermaid Moon by Susann Cokal

From Michael L. Printz Honor winner Cokal, this 2020 fantasy novel centers on a mermaid who is only half seavish (her mother is landish). Because of her mixed background, Sanna has trouble finding acceptance in mermaid society. She goes to work for a witch who can help her grow legs and take to land to search for her mother. The quest is fraught with danger, and readers will be drawn in by Sanna’s bravery in the face of peril and her determination to understand herself and her world.

9781536215892 The Mermaid, the Witch, and the Sea by Maggie Tokuda-Hall

A pirate, Florian (born Flora), and an upper-class young woman, Lady Evelyn, find themselves together on the ship Dove. When the crew for whom Florian works takes over the boat, and Evelyn becomes a captive, the two young women fall in love and cast off their respective societal rules. Tokuda-Hall’s work, which spans the sea and the mermaids, witches, and secret agents, is a nautical fantasy and a thoughtful commentary on imperialism.

9780147510655 Atlantia by Ally Condie

While Condie’s novel technically features sirens, not mermaids, the underwater world they inhabit will entrance ocean lovers. In a dystopian world where land (called Above) and sea (called Below) are separate societies, Rio dwells in Below but dreams of a life on land. When her twin sister abandons her to go Above, Rio must fend for herself. In possession of a powerful siren voice and questions about her mother’s death, Rio faces difficult choices, never sure who she can trust. Fans praise Condie’s excellent world-building, and the mysterious land of Below will keep the pages turning.

9781368068185 Part of Your World by Stephanie Kate Strohm

This twist on the Disney classic poses the question: What if Ariel hadn’t bested the sea witch Ursula? The answer is that Ariel — still without her voice — rules Atlantica while Ursula controls Prince Eric’s kingdom. When Ariel learns her father might still be alive, she revisits her life on land and reunites with the prince she once loved. This twisted tale is ideal for teens seeking a darker take on the sweet Disney story.

9781401283391 Mera: Tidebreaker by Danielle Paige

Princess Mera, one of the more under-the-radar characters in the DC Comics universe, gets a starring role in this graphic novel. Next in line to rule Xebel – a penal colony under the rule of Atlantis – Mera is betrothed to that kingdom’s prince, Arthur Curry. But the Xebellian military wants to overthrow oppressive Atlantis, and Mera wants to be part of it – by assassinating Arthur herself. Until she falls for him. Reviewers and readers alike attest that this graphic novel doesn’t require background knowledge about the DC universe – tough, cool Princess Mera and a fascinating story will pull readers in, whether they’re comic book fans or not.

9780804168564 The Waterfire Saga by Jennifer Donnelly

This audiobook series kicks off on mermaid Seraphina’s wedding day. Instead of fretting about her marriage, she’s distracted by the strange and unsettling dreams she’s been having of an ancient evil. When an assassin’s arrow strikes her mother, Sera ventures out from the Mediterranean to bring together the Mer people. Subsequent stories span the six realms of the sea, uniting Sera with other mermaids who are ancestors of the Six Who Ruled. Author Jennifer Donnelly, known for her historical fiction, expertly glides into this underwater fantasy, the perfect saga to keep readers hooked until the very end.

yes no Adult Books

The following novels are intended for and marketed as fiction for adults. However, these mermaid-centric stories may be appropriate for young adult readers 14 and up.

9780399584046 The Mermaid by Christina Henry

If anyone understands the draw of a real-life mermaid, it’s the world’s greatest showman, circus pioneer P. T. Barnum. Bestselling author Henry hypothesizes on the meeting of a mermaid and the man who loved to amaze people — so long as they had the money to pay. But when the mermaid in question, Amelia, longs to return to the sea, Barnum doesn’t want to part with his star attraction. Henry’s book, with its mix of historical fiction and fantasy, is ideal for older teens.

9780307589972 Mermaid by Carolyn Turgeon

A dark retelling of Hans Christian Andersen’s The Little Mermaid, this one is for readers who like gothic tales. Princess Margrethe, hidden from the kingdom while war rages, believes she witnesses a miracle when she spies a mermaid rescuing a man from the sea. Margrethe nurses him back to health but doesn’t know that the mermaid, a princess named Lenia, makes a dangerous bargain to be with the human man. Turgeon’s gorgeous writing and propulsive love triangle will keep readers wondering until the end.
