The post 11 Picture Books To Help Teach Kids About Being Brave appeared first on Brightly.
]]>During the average person’s lifetime, they’ll experience successes, failures, rejections, and many unexpected turns. That’s why I think it’s important to instill courage in children from a young age and continuously expose them to safe opportunities where they can practice being brave in real-life scenarios.
Below, I’ve rounded up a list of picture books to help facilitate conversations about bravery and courage. These stories help kids understand that they’re strong, they can cope, and they’re not as fragile and small as they might sometimes feel.
no no 9780399246531 The Day You Begin by Jacqueline Woodson, illustrated by Rafael López
The inimitable Jacqueline Woodson has gifted us with a powerful, poetic picture book to share with children while talking about bravery and acceptance. It’s a great read-aloud for classroom settings to discuss empathy and appreciating the unique experiences, qualities, and cultures of others.
9780593564691 Piper Chen Sings by Phillipa Soo and Maris Pasquale Doran, illustrated by Qin Leng
Piper loves singing, so she’s thrilled to get a solo in the upcoming Spring Sing. However, it doesn’t take long before she feels nervous about performing in front of the school. With help and encouragement from her family (and lots of practice), Piper overcomes her jitters and delivers a well-rehearsed performance.
9781524787011 Tomorrow I’ll Be Brave by Jessica Hische
This book teaches kids that bravery isn’t about being fearless. It’s about something magical that happens inside of us to push through our fear, self-doubt, and anxiety and do the things that feel hard or frightening. Sometimes, being brave only has to happen for seconds at a time — just long enough to be just brave enough.
9781524739058 Come With Me by Holly M. McGhee, illustrated by Pascal Lemaître
Come With Me subtly addresses fears children may have about hatred and violence occurring in the world today. A helpful resource for tragic events you’re unsure how to explain, this book also shows kids they can make a difference and be brave no matter how small they are.
9780593406410 Esi the Brave (Who Was Not Afraid of Anything) by Bernard Mensah, illustrated by Raissa Figueroa
Esi is excited to attend the Kakamotobi Festival with her parents. But when she gets separated from them at the festival, she must stay calm and brave. Colorful, detailed illustrations and a relatable main character make this an excellent addition to storytime.
9780525579014 Bold & Brave by Kirsten Gillibrand, illustrated by Maira Kalman
An inspiring picture book, Bold & Brave features the extraordinary stories of ten suffragettes, including Harriet Tubman, Susan B. Anthony, and Elizabeth Cady Stanton. Each of the women profiled had to be courageous, and they took great risks by speaking up and demanding voting rights for women in America.
9781536232547 How to Be Brave by Karl Newson, illustrated by Clara Anganuzzi
Follow a child and their animal friends as they overcome fears and try new things. This sweet book encourages children to set aside their apprehension and be open to new experiences. Embracing the unknown can lead to rewarding friendships, memories, and adventure.

9780399163975 Little Tree by Loren Long
Little Tree is afraid to let go of its leaves, so it remains small while all the other trees grow bigger each year. This is a heartwarming story with sparse text that echoes themes of letting go, fear of change, and the bravery of taking a leap of faith.
9781536225082 As Brave as a Lion by Erika Meza
Whenever the little girl in this story feels too shy or afraid, her big, brave lion steps in to help her out. And when they get into a situation where the lion feels scared, the girl musters her courage to help her friend. This vibrant story celebrates how good friends can help us face our fears.
9780147510587 Back of the Bus by Aaron Reynolds, illustrated by Floyd Cooper
A beautiful and historical retelling of the activism of Rosa Parks in Montgomery, Alabama, as seen through a child’s perspective. While the little boy finds the situation a bit scary, he also feels proud of the brave women like his mother and Mrs. Parks, and how they stood up to social injustice. It’s a wonderful read for teaching children about courage.

]]>Let’s face it, finding good, quality books featuring people of color is hard! It’s a lot easier today than it used to be years back, but the struggle is real. This is especially true when it comes to books that feature Black boys as the main character.
As a parent, my goal is to present my children with a full spectrum of Brown and Black characters in a variety of books. I want their experiences of story and representations of the world to include people of color, people they can imagine being like — people like Oprah Winfrey, Barack Obama, Misty Copeland, Michelle Obama, and Michael Jordan — or fictional characters with whom they can identify.
Of course, I believe all children should be exposed to a wide range of people, experiences, and cultures. We still need greater diversity in children’s books to make this happen. But we also need people to buy and read the great books that are out there so publishers will continue to publish them.
Here are 30 picture books featuring Black males as the main protagonist to enjoy with the little ones in your life.

You often hear of many Black fathers being absent from their children’s lives, so it was refreshing to see Leo and his father bonding — so precious. I also love how well this book showcases diversity. There are babies and caregivers of all different skin tones and hair types/colors featured throughout. A great book for the littlest readers!

]]>At moments like these, it feels even more important to have conversations with the children in our lives about topics like empathy, compassion, kindness, and inclusion. Born with a facial deformity, Auggie knows that he looks different from other children but is hopeful that others will see past his differences and appreciate all the other things that make him unique. This is a powerful story of accepting others for who they really are and not judging them based on how they look. The illustrations are bright and stunning to hold the attention of young readers. This book is also a great resource to use in a classroom setting to help teach kindness by igniting conversations of when children have felt different, how they feel when others stare or poke fun at them, and what would they do if someone was making fun of one of their friends or family members. 9780399246524 Each Kindness by Jacqueline Woodson, illustrated by E.B. Lewis
This is not a book with a happy ending that comes packaged up in a nice, neat bow. It’s heartbreaking, but so powerful and poignant for upper elementary, middle grade, and perhaps some adult readers, too. It teaches important lessons about kindness and thoughtfulness, and is great for fostering open-ended discussions with older children about things like acceptance, bullying, consequences, making a good first impression, taking responsibility for your actions, feelings, and compassion. I adore the lesson about kindness that the teacher in the book gives to her students, likening kindness to a pebble in the water that sends out ripples.
(Ages 5 – 8)
9781524739058 Come With Me by Holly M. McGhee, illustrated by Pascal Lemaître
I think this story is so great! It’s about a little girl who is saddened by the news she sees on TV. She asks her parents what she can do to make the world a better place. Inspired and perhaps impressed by his daughter’s question, the father takes her on a walk through the city, greeting everyone he sees with a kind smile and a tip of his hat. The little girl is inspired by her parents’ gentle regard for the world and invites the boy next door to come outside and walk the dog with her. I appreciate how this book communicates that small acts of kindness and bravery are what ultimately makes the world a better place. Simply put, the kind things we do matter no matter how big or small.

But aren’t we all a little finicky sometimes? Besides, isn’t it normal for children to be fussy eaters? It’s a way of exploring their environment and asserting their independence. ]]>The post 22 Books That Celebrate Lesser-Known African Americans and Their Contributions to History appeared first on Brightly.
]]>Historically, many African Americans and their contributions have been left out of many American history books and have unfortunately gone unrecognized. For example, did you know that of the estimated 35,000 cowboys who worked ranches and rode trails in the American West, 5,000 – 9,000 or more were Black? Did you know that Thomas L. Jennings, the inventor credited for inventing the dry-cleaning process, was also the first African American to hold a U.S. patent? The patent was issued in 1821.
There are so many interesting things we can learn about the contributions of African Americans to our society and the world. The best part? We can all learn and share about these contributions every day — not just in February.
I hope this list of books inspires you to celebrate those who, without fanfare, played key roles in American history.

Yet with all this success, she knew firsthand how bigotry shaped her world. And when she was offered the role of a lifetime from Ziegfeld himself, she chose to support all-Black musicals instead.

She never learned to read or write and didn’t like school, but she always had a love of painting. Eventually her work found its way into the New Orleans Museum of Art. Not bad considering she initially sold her artwork for 25 cents per piece and was hesitant to charge even that. Today her original paintings are worth thousands of dollars and are sold in galleries across the country. They are also on permanent display in many museums. Clementine painted until her last days and lived to be 100 years old.

In 1947, Chester Pierce made history when he stepped on the field at the University of Virginia to play for Harvard. Louis Armstrong might be a household name, but his wife Lillian Harden — known in her heyday as “Hot Miss Lil” — deserves a place in our collective memories, too. Lil always had the beat, even when she was a young girl, and she went on to pioneer female musicianship in jazz, an area where women were often confined to the microphone. Exuberant illustrations and rhythmic text give this larger-than-life figure the spotlight she deserves.

The curators of history have great shaping power over what — and who — we remember. Luckily for all of us, Arturo Schomburg, an Afro-Puerto Rican law clerk during the Harlem Renaissance, passionately collected books, letters, music, and art from Africa and the African diaspora. At first, the collection lived in his home, but when it bloomed to untenable proportions, he created a new Negro Division at the New York Public Library, now known as the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture.

]]>I love poetry because it’s so universal, unique, and accessible to kids. The compact, songlike nature of many poems can make learning language feel almost effortless to children. They don’t even realize how much they’re retaining by reciting a simple nursery rhyme or short poem. Reading poems aloud helps children to practice their volume, pitch, and voice inflection, among other things.
Poetry, like other forms of literature, can also be entertaining, beautiful, and meaningful. Kids are usually immediately drawn to the rhythm and rhyme of poetry. Much like diversity, poetry can provide a mirror for us to see ourselves, and a window into others’ experiences, to help us understand the lives and perspectives of different people.
Here are more than 30 diverse poetry picture books to explore with kids. Enjoy!
